Loon Lodge on Leech Lake – Paddleboard

1. Water Adventures & Swimming on Leech Lake

Warm summer days in Walker often reach highs around 79 °F with comfortable evenings cooling into the upper 50s ℉. On those days, the lake is your front yard. Enjoy boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply swimming off the weed-free sand beach where the bottom is ideal for wading and relaxing. The clarity and calm of the water make for joyful, family-friendly lake time and water games.

2. Local Golf Courses

Tianna Country Club

Golf lovers will appreciate the variety and scenery of nearby courses. Tianna Country Club, just a short drive away, is an 18-hole, par-72 course set among rolling terrain and mature trees—ideal for players seeking a challenging but scenic round. (Tianna welcoming golfers for more than 90 years.)

Also nearby is Moonlight Bay Golf Course, located just about five miles north of Walker, offering lake views and a relaxing layout.

3. Local Trails & Walks

If you prefer exploring on foot or bike, the area around Walker features several great local trails:

  • Heartland State Trail runs through Walker on a paved route, connecting to the Paul Bunyan State Trail system. The trail offers forest and lake scenery, and is level for easy biking or walking.
  • Shingobee Connection Trail links Walker to sections of the Heartland and Paul Bunyan trails, forming a local “Walker Loop.” You can enjoy forested hills, creek views, and a moderate ride or walk.
  • County Road 50 Walking Trail runs about 8 miles along the Shingobee River Valley and offers a peaceful local option right out your door.

These trails let you stretch your legs, spot wildlife, and enjoy Minnesota’s Northwoods without venturing far from your lodging.

4. Sail & Cruise Tours on Leech Lake

Take to the lake from a different angle: book a sailing charter or a scenic cruise. There are couple of sailing services offer 2-3 hour cruises (and even 5-hour main lake trips) aboard a classic sailboat, complete with history insights, lake lore, and the option for guests to take the helm (check yourboatclub.com and www.sailingdaze.com).

These cruises offer a relaxing way to see the lakeshore, take in sunsets, swim from secluded sandbars, or just float with the breeze. Imagine cutting through calm waters, hearing gulls cry, and watching expansive bluff and forest scenery glide by. It’s a perfect complement to active days of fishing, swimming, or biking; a calmer pace to absorb the beauty of Leech Lake from its center.
